Spotify Removes “Shuffle” As Default Play Option After Adele Request

Spotify made a major change to its platform, removing “shuffle” as the default play option for albums, after Adele requested that it be changed.

The “shuffle” icon automatically appeared on the play button when users click on an album, but will now only be accessible when a user clicks to view the album’s track list.

Adele, who released her fourth album 30 Friday tweeted about the decision, writing “This was the only request I had in our ever-changing industry!”

“We don’t create albums with such care and thoughtfulness in our tracklist for no reason. Our art tells a story and our stories should be heard as we intended.

A representative for Spotify spoke to ABC of the decision, stating “As Adele mentioned, we are excited to share that we have started rolling out a new Premium feature that has long been requested by users and artists to make the default button play on all the albums.

“For users who still want to shuffle an album, they can go to the Now Playing view and select the shuffle toggle. “

Adele has long resisted the use of streaming platforms as a method of listening to music, refraining from releasing her 2015 album. 25 on streaming services until June of the following year.

‘Easy On Me’, the first single from 30, broke Spotify’s single-day most-listened song with 19.75 million when it was released, breaking BTS’s record with “Butter” on May 21, 2021, with 11.04 million streams.
