This award recognizes KEEN’s efforts since 2014, to eliminate toxic PFCs / PFASs from the product line
PORTLAND, Ore., October 18, 2021 / PRNewswire / – KEEN, Inc. (KEEN), the footwear brand with a mission to make the outdoors inclusive and accessible to all, today announced that Good Housekeeping awarded the brand the Good Housekeeping 2021 Sustainability Innovation Award for its Detox the Planet initiative which prevents perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from entering its shoes.
PFC / PFAS, a class of approximately 5,000 fluorochemicals also known as “forever chemicals” are often used in water repellent finishes for everyday products. These toxic chemicals enter the environment where chemicals, components and finished products are made, through contaminated water or waste, and spread easily, posing health risks to humans and animals.
In 2014, KEEN made a commitment to eliminate PFCs from its supply chain and successfully switched PFC-free across its entire footwear line in 2018. This year, KEEN opened its process to become PFC-free through its Green paper: Towards PFC-free shoes, so that other brands can take the same journey faster and more efficiently. “Being recognized for these efforts by Good Housekeeping underscores the importance of this issue,” says Erik Burbank Vice-president of KEEN Effect. “Our journey to eliminate these chemicals has been a top priority at KEEN. PFC / PFAS are so ubiquitous that they bioaccumulate and do not break down, which is why they are called chemicals forever. KEEN is not only to remove these toxins from our line, but also to help other brands to do the same. We have a proven method of replacing these chemicals with safe, affordable and effective alternatives, and we want to share these lessons to protect people and the planet.
Created in 2014, Detox the Planet from KEEN Initiative was created to take proactive action against harmful chemicals in its supply chain by identifying them, removing them and replacing them with safe and effective alternatives. Committed to eliminating everything that shouldn’t be in its products and finding eco-friendly alternatives, one hundred percent of KEEN’s leather comes from tanneries with no liquid waste, as its designers removed dangerous antimicrobial chemicals and biocides from their soles. The brand continues to aggressively seek innovative solutions, including waste collection and recycling, to use the earth’s resources wisely and reduce KEEN’s overall impact on the planet.
